CCC General Secretary on
solidarity visit to Haiti

Gerard A. J. Granado, General Secretary of the Caribbean Conference of Churches (CCC) will be part of an international ecumenical delegation on a solidarity visit to Haiti taking place during the period June 14 to 16, 2010.

The purpose of this visit is to express solidarity with the victims of the January 12 earthquake, offer pastoral accompaniment and reflect on the current challenges the churches are facing as they try to serve the Haitian people. Such a visit follows on from other visits that have taken place and which continue the history of accompaniment of the churches and the people of Haiti, and the strengthening of existing relationships.

CCC’s commitment to engaging and accompanying the people of Haiti was reflected in the General Secretary’s statement made on the occurrence of the devastating January 12 earthquake. In said statement the General Secretary noted that: “Along with our condolences and prayerful support, we also offer at this time to the Haitian people our commitment to work towards alleviating their present unspeakable misery, and collaborating with them in forging a future more worthy of their dignity as children of God.” He also emphasized the need for the world at large to support Haiti in “its quest for authentic development,” which should be underpinned by the tenets of effective coordination, consolidation of effort and rationalisation of resources among all concerned.

While in Haiti, the delegation’s schedule of activities will include: meeting with the local host, The Protestant Federation of Haiti; meeting and prayer with the churches’ leadership in Haiti, site visits to church projects benefiting the victims of the January 12 earthquake; and meeting with government officials. During this visit, the CCC’s General Secretary will also be part of a Panel/Forum at the ACT Alliance Office on “The Ecumenical Movement’s Involvement in Haiti”.
